adventures in international candy

Day 4!

My allergies are terrible today. My whole face itches. I just took Benadryl, so hopefully it clears soon.

It's nearly the weekend! I'm going to put my phone in a drawer and ignore the world for like a whole day.

We need to figure out a Mother's Day gift for my MIL, so we'll probably venture out for that. And to try out a new bookstore if we're motivated. We have so many in town, but I must go to them all.

I tried salt licorice today and it's weirdly amazing. Someone brought it to a meeting this evening at the local school. Apparently it's big in Sweden and his wife loves it but he warned us many people hate it and he wouldn't be offended if we spit it out because he doesn't like it either. I was the only person there that liked it. Apparently World Market sells it (but a different brand I think) so I must procure some. I don't remember ever having black licorice so maybe I like that now? Palates are weird.

I need a haircut but alas, I don't want to. So it'll wait at least another wait. If I wait long enough, I won't even have bangs anymore.

comments

cornbread is the best bread

Day 3!

I just got home from work about half an hour ago. It was a decent day in the office. Lots of good people to see and had lunch with some folks.

Husband is making dinner and the cornbread finished before the rest of the stuff, so I just had a little sliver. There are few things better in this world than very hot cornbread with butter. He's making stovetop macaroni too. Similar to the baked one for holidays but stays creamy longer.

I'm so excited about doing nothing this weekend. I think I just recovered from last weekend's out of state trip. My bag isn't even unpacked yet. It's right behind me.

The old I get the more I relate to the line from Steel Magnolias about loving someone more than my luggage. I'm oddly fond of the collection of bags I have. My rolly bag even has a cup holder!

Though I'm still searching for the perfect mini bag for a day trip. I may end up with one of the vintage mini suitcases like my grandfather had. Teeny and ugly florals. It's my destiny.

I finished Yesteryear last night. I can't decide if I loved it or hated it. It's compelling in the way that makes me want to go back and reread sections to pick up on little clues I missed about where it was going. I hated basically every character though.

I don't know what I'm going to read next. I have a couple of books that I got a few weeks ago. One that is a cheerful dystopia so that may be the vibe. I'm still chasing the high from Automatic Noodle.

I just reserved a physical library book. Since it's currently available, hopefully I'll remember to actually pick it up this time. Unlike the poor attention span one that never made it home.

comments

lazy Tuesday evening

Day 2! That's nearly a habit.

I just finished work for the day. It's still weird working from home even though I've worked remote the majority of the time since covid hit.

I struggle to internalize that it's been SIX YEARS since the world went all wonky. I think it hit right at the time where years started to both go fast and blur together.

The pup is barking at the husband because she wants his attention and he has the nerve to be making dinner instead of playing. I'd play with her but we just did and it's a him specific need right now. Silly dog, but he'll be free momentarily.

Dear void -- remember the old surveys that you'd do when you couldn't think of a topic? Or the topic/question of the day/week? I wonder if anyone does those here. I poked around the communities and didn't find anything.

Today was a busy but treading water kind of day. I'm ready for the weekend. I want to sleep in and maybe go to the library. Or a new bookstore, we have an even newer one opening nearby. I don't know if the city can sustain this many but it's fun while it lasts.

Still going through Yesteryear, I'm not sure where it's going to end but I want to find out. I'm about halfway through it.

Really just killing reading time until the new Dungeon Crawler Carl comes out. I read all of them so far this year, which is the fastest I've read a series since Animorphs or Babysitters Club. So multiple decades.

There's nothing I have to do this evening which is kind of fantastic. I have about 5 hours to use poorly. Probably watch some baseball and read after dinner. Definitely waste some time online. I read but don't post on Reddit but it feels like it's all blending toward the same AI-slop at this point. Or maybe I've finally reached the end of the internet. :) I always knew it'd eventually happen.

comments

like a time machine

It's crazy how much this looks like the old site.

It's like a time machine to 2003. I posted a lot in college and some afterward but not very dedicated after that. In high school, I was on a different diary site. I haven't had a public/online journal for at least something like 15 years.

It's weird talking to myself. I think this could be fun to try again. Or maybe I'll give up immediately.

I miss pre-social-media internet. Or maybe just pre everything-is-monetized internet. Instagram was fun when it was all puppy pics and pizza. But now you get stuck in a recommended loop. I don't care about those randos, I want to see my friends and what they're doing.

Insert obligatory Man-Yells-At-Cloud from the Simpsons meme.

Maybe I'm just old and cranky. That seems appropriate now that I'm in my 40s. Clearly kids today are doing the internet wrong. It's not that I have boring responsibilities and am in pointless meetings for most of my existence. It's clearly the internet's fault.

Today's my 500 reading streak in Fable. Gamification really works on me. I love a streak.

I'm reading Yesteryear and I can't figure out if I hate the book, hate the protagonist, or hate the influencers that inspired the satire. Clearly I must finish it and find out.

Last night we watched When Harry Met Sally on dvd. I've begun one of my silly quests. I'm collecting all the romcoms that aren't on streaming. Though this recently came to streaming. My speciality is romcoms that no one would say is their favorite movie but are a perfectly lovely way to spend an afternoon. Must Love Dogs is a perfect example.

While I was typing that, I got a chrome prompt for Gemini to help me with my tasks. I don't want AI to help me with my stupid blog. I am perfectly capable of wasting time online ruminating without any robotic help. Except spellcheck. I need that because let's face it, there are some words I may never get correct on the first three tries.

comments
